A compressor that will not start or keeps tripping the breaker gets tested before it is replaced. On several of the service calls below, the work began with the starting circuit, terminal and winding readings, resistance to ground, or the power reaching the contactor; on one walk-in, the first fault found was a loose breaker in the basement panel. Once the compressor is confirmed failed, Cyclone HVACRWD Company recovers the refrigerant, fits and brazes the replacement with a new filter drier, pressure-tests with nitrogen, evacuates and charges the system, then checks amps, pressures and cabinet temperature. The same jobs also show the checks for what may have caused the failure: refrigerant leaks, a restricted filter drier, moisture and degraded oil in the piping, condenser fans and coils, and expansion valves. When to request service
Signs your compressor needs attention
The compressor will not start, makes repeated start attempts, or keeps damaging its starting components
The breaker trips, or a ground fault has been measured between the compressor terminals and the chassis
A refrigerator, freezer, prep table, display case or walk-in is running warm while the condensing unit short cycles or shuts off
The unit has a known refrigerant leak, a restricted filter drier, high head pressure or a failed condenser fan
Scope of work
What a compressor replacement includes
- Electrical testing first: terminal and winding readings, resistance to ground, the starting circuit, voltage at the contactor and the breaker
- Refrigerant recovery with a recovery machine and cylinder, including units whose service valves will not isolate the compressor
- Hermetic, semi-hermetic and scroll replacements, with mounting, piping and start-component adaptation when the new compressor differs from the original
- A new filter drier and, when the job calls for it, pressure controls, valve cores, condenser-fan motors or a pressure-regulating valve
- Brazing under nitrogen purge, nitrogen pressure test, bubble-solution leak checks, evacuation with a vacuum pump, and a refrigerant charge weighed on a scale
- A check for what may have caused the original failure: leaks, restricted filter driers, moisture or degraded oil in the piping, condenser coils and fans, and expansion valves
- Start-up checks: compressor amps with a clamp meter, low- and high-side pressures, superheat and subcooling, expansion-valve adjustment, and cabinet or box temperature
